5 out of 5 stars Awesome pack   March 3, 2010

I got this for longer trail runs and boulder scrambles at Devil's Lake state park. The little stash pocket up top is perfect for keys and cellphone, the side pockets are great for gels and Clif bars. The elastic cord on the outside is fine, but I replaced mine with a few meters of paracord to allow larger things to be strapped to the back. Fit is solid and the reflective strips are great for running at night. I also put the Camelbak Thermal Control Kit on the hose to keep the water cooler in the summer and I highly recommend doing the same if you plan on using the pack in high temps.

4 out of 5 stars CamelBak Octane XC 70-Ounce Hydration Pack   September 12, 2009

Pros
* Carries lots of water - I can run 24 miles with this pack
* Comfortable when running on trails
* Mouth piece works nicely
* Easy to refill

Cons
* Waist storage compartments are a bit small - although I was able to carry enough energy bars, gels, and headlamp for a 50k race
* Top storage is very small - only big enough for keys and money

Overall
* Great pack, perfect for what its intended for - trail running.
* Could use more storage compartments
* Good value for your money
* Other pack I would consider is the Ultimate Direction Wasp - which I will probably buy anyway.

4 out of 5 stars Best so far   September 18, 2009

I wanted to use this for trail running and endurance riding (horseback) both of which involve a fair amount of motion. While anything with water in it is going to bounce some while moving, this pack is by far the best for minimal motion. Not a lot of room for accessories, but I wasn't looking for that. I'm pretty happy with it.

4 out of 5 stars Great, with a few caveats   February 18, 2010

I bought this for my weekly long runs of 12-20 miles. Just need to carry water, some gels, a ClifBar, a cellphone, and perhaps a wallet. If I were living in a colder climate, it would also allow me to cram in an extra layer, maybe a pair of gloves. The Octane XC70 does all that beautifully and does not bounce, which was my main concern, and it also did not make my back sweat nearly as much as I had feared.

Now the caveats:

1. This thing claims to be 70oz, but when I tried to pour in two 1-quart bottles' worth of water (64oz), it could only take about 3/4 of the second bottle. I laid the bag flat with the opening facing upwards, but even then it didn't take as much as claimed.

2. More disturbingly is that the reservoir LEAKS if you fill it above the level of the 5" diameter water cap! At first I thought I had screwed the cap in lopsided or something, but after several attempts to re-adjust it, the leaking continued. Not good.

So in reality, it actually holds maybe 55oz if you don't want to deal with a slight drip for the first half hour or so of your run.

Personally I found that 70oz is enough for about 14 miles in 80 degree weather if you pre-drink about 16oz of water before starting the run. But when going farther, and in hotter weather, I will be bringing at least one of my Amphipod hand-held 20oz water bottles---and after finishing it, putting the empty bottle into the zippered compartment.

I wish Camelbak would make a larger version of this pack, maybe 100oz? And with a better seal around the water cap.

3. I found the bite valve to be more annoying than anything---having to bite hard on it so that it will stay open, while simultaneously sucking out the water, is kind of tedious. Luckily, it is easily removable and there is even a little twist-valve to prevent any spillage...and was pleasantly surprised that I didn't even need to use the twist-valve to prevent any mess...after you sip through the tube, the water mostly returns to the reservoir so the tube is largely empty!

4. The sloshing sound of the water in the pack can take a bit of getting used to, esp. if like me you don't wear headphones while running.

However, since there are no public water fountains during the course of my long runs, I have no choice but to use this pack...sigh! During marathons I'll take only my handheld bottle and refill it at the water stations.
